Eco-Travel Guide: The Ultimate List of Sustainable Accommodation

Looking to add sustainable hotels to your bucket-list?! Below is The Green Wall’s first eco-travel guide that explores four interesting topics on how to travel in a more sustainable way before presenting The Ultimate List of Sustainable Accommodation.

Fly Carbon Neutral

Next time you’re heading above the clouds, ensure you purchase carbon offsets.

At The Green Wall, we believe that all airlines should build this into the cost of a ticket. This is currently not common practices, so in the meantime, choose to offset emissions by purchasing certified carbon offsets. Some airlines provide the ability to purchase carbon offsets when you book your ticket.

Another option is to calculate your estimated emissions from flying or other transport throughout your journey, such as from buses or cars, and purchase carbon offsets.

Purchase Carbon Offsets

For more information on carbon credits or to find an organisation that can offset your travel, visit the Carbon Market Institute.

From initial research and planning to booking hotels and transport, we all search the internet several times before ending up back at home planning the next trip.

Why not plant some trees whilst you travel?

Ecosia is the search engine that plants trees. They use the profits from ads that are displayed during your search to plant trees and have currently planted over 60 million trees and invested over 9 million euros.

SDG’s and travel

In 2015, world leaders at the United Nations committed all countries to pursue 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) to be achieved by 2030.

The SDGs set the world on a path for sustainable development and tourism can play a significant role in delivering solutions that meet some of these goals either directly or indirectly.

Travel Sustainably

Hotels and resorts that have received an eco-label have taken steps to achieving several SDG’s.

For example, Green Globe identified three key goals that relate to sustainable tourism and are built into their more than 40 sustainability criteria to receive certification:

  • Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth;
  • Goal 12: Responsible consumption and production; and
  • Goal 14: Life below water.

We are excited to share that The Green Wall has been recognised as an initiative that promotes the advancement of the Sustainable Development Goals by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation.

Choose Certified

The tourism industry is beginning to shift its focus towards sustainability by taking actions like banning single use plastics, investing in renewable energy to sourcing local produce.

These actions are resulting in less waste to landfill, lower electricity sector emissions, lower transport sector emissions and added support to local economies to name a few of the benefits.

Travellers can now use The Green Wall platform to search for resorts that have been certified by world leading tourism eco-labels Green Globe, Green Key, NEPCon, EarthCheck and Travel Life.

For hotels and resorts to receive certification they must meet strict criteria from areas such as sustainable management, social/economic, cultural heritage, environment with audits happening on a regular basis to ensure their claims validity.
